Here is a recent deck renovation we did where we removed all existing handrails and replaced with these new cedar rails with black metal balusters. We became very good friends with our squares, as all rails are cut to fit all of the different angles at which they meet each post.

All of the handrails came in a kit that the owner ordered and then pre-stained. That’s where we took over. It is a very cool system in how you mount the brackets that hold each rail. The top handrail is mounted to the top 2×4 from the bottom baluster holes so all screws are concealed. Where it got tricky was cutting all of the angles so all of the rails fit tight to the 4×4 posts.

As you’ll see under the deck we actually enclosed that space with lattice creating a storage area for yard tools or anything yard decor you aren’t using at the moment. Right under the stairs there is an access door for the space also wrapped in lattice.

The owner went back after the fact and stained all of the treated lumber that dark color. We love the way it looks on the lighter color handrails!
